Research Design ~ Nova Dissertation

(Kia, 2015)

There are several different types of research designs available: experimental, correlational, survey, grounded, ethnographic, narrative, mixed methods, and action (Creswell, 2014). It may feel overwhelming deciding on the type of research design one may utilize in an experiment. Within my research I have decided that a correlational design fits best. I determined this by asking myself “what is the goal of my research?” I want to compare diet recommendations and compensatory strategies from the modified barium swallow study (MBS) and the fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallow (FEES). Creswell (2014) reported that there are two types of correlational designs: explanatory and prediction. An explanatory design relates/compares two or more variables within a study while a prediction design focuses on variables that will predict an outcome (Creswell, 2014). I feel that my research is an explanatory design due to only comparing the outcomes of two instrumental swallowing assessments.

Purpose Statement
The purpose of this study is to determine the intra-rater reliability of the MBS and the FEES for measuring diet recommendations and compensatory strategies in patients with and without dysphagia.

Research Questions
The following questions will guide this study.

How do diet recommendations evaluated through MBS compare to diet recommendations evaluated through FEES?

How do recommended compensatory strategies evaluated through MBS compare to recommended compensatory strategies evaluated through FEES?

What is the intra-rater reliability of diet recommendations and compensatory strategies evaluated through the MBS and FEES in individuals with dysphagia?

What is the intra-rater reliability of diet recommendations and compensatory strategies evaluated through MBS and FEES in individuals without dysphagia?

How does the intra-rater reliability of diet recommendations and compensatory strategies evaluated through MBS and FEES in individuals with dysphagia compare to the intra-rater reliability in individuals without dysphagia?
