(Kia, 2015) There are several different types of research designs available: experimental, correlational, survey, grounded, ethnographic, narrative, mixed methods, and action (Creswell, 2014). It may feel overwhelming deciding on the type of research design one may utilize in an experiment. Within my research I have decided that a correlational design fits best. I determined this by asking myself “what is the goal of my research?” I want to compare diet recommendations and compensatory strategies from the modified barium swallow study (MBS) and the fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallow (FEES). Creswell (2014) reported that there are two types of correlational designs: explanatory and prediction. An explanatory design relates/compares two or more variables within a study while a prediction design focuses on variables that will predict an outcome (Creswell, 2014).
