Hidden Talents!

The other day during one of my treatment sessions I noticed one of my patients choose to read my book of Word Records for fun. In attempts to relate to my patient's interest I told him that when I was a child that I wanted to beat a word record. That world record happened to be balancing coins on your elbow and then flipping them off and catching them. He didn't believe me! So I told him to give me the week to re-orient myself to the trick and I would show him next week.

One of my co-workers was kind enough to video tape my little stunt - 25 pennies - I'm pretty proud! I apologize some of the tape was cut off.





Sharing this activity opened so many language opportunities with my patient. For instance...

1. Tell me the steps I had to do to in this hidden talent.
2. How many coins do you think I had stacked?
3. Do you think you could do this activity?
4. What does hidden talent mean?
5. Do you have any hidden talents?
6. Look in the word record book what "hidden talent" do you find most interesting?
7. If you could break a world record what would it be?
8. What would you have to do to train to break that world record?
9. Write about a world record...
10. How do you think it feels to beat a world record?
11. I had to do  steps 1, 2, and 3, to do this...what did I have to do?

Using your skills as a Speech-Language Pathologist and a bit of silliness combined it is amazing what can be accomplished in a fun treatment session!

So I ask you, what are your hidden talents? I have to say that I only have one other hidden talent...I can do the worm, yes the old school break dancing worm :-) but that video is for another day! Have a great week everyone and leave comments!

Shaving Cream Fun!

This Week in Speech ~ Shaving Cream Fun! This week in speech we decided to get a little messy! With shaving cream, a lunchroom tray, lots of towels, and various treatment plans we were able to have a lot of fun!   My department orders these tiny shaving cream canisters. Simply spray onto a surface that can be wiped off and you are set for fun!   There are so many options that you can use this in therapy! Here are just a few ideas! Articulation – you or your student draw out target words to practice Reading sight words Spelling Visual memory – write it down, draw it out, and then wipe it off – recall later Story telling Receptive language – identifying drawings Vocabulary – Learning about the vocabulary terms of “soft” “messy” “fluffy” and “white.” Drawing/writing synonyms and antonyms. "Swing Thoughts"

Once upon a time, I wasn’t a Speech-Language Pathologist. Crazy right? My identify for so many years, has been that I am an SLP. But yes, before I went into the field I was actually a golfer. That was my identify for the majority of my life. My dad, Charlie Mahon, is a Class A PGA Golf Professional. My older brother, Charlie Mahon Jr., ran golf courses for most of his career and played for UMKC in college. My older sister, Courtney Mahon, she is now an LPGA Teaching Instructor and played for the University of Arkansas in college. My mom, our biggest cheerleader! I guess you can say I was born into a golfing family and it appeared that golf would be my destiny. I played golf throughout high school and then moved onto earning a scholarship to play for Missouri State University. I learned so many life lessons from playing golf.
