Following Directions and Visual Support

Today in a treatment session I was working on following multi-step directions with one of my patients. This patient has difficulty with auditory processing. One of the directions was for the patient to think of a number between 5 and 10 and then to write it on a piece of paper. I took a picture of what happened below.

My patient wrote 5+10= box (the box I'm guessing was likely drawn because I instructed the patient to write it in the bigger box). After my patient did this I proceeded to explain that when we think of a number between 5 and 10 we can choose 6, 7, 8, or 9. Again my patient didn't seem to understand so I supported with visual aid as you can see in the picture... I wrote out the numbers and gave support to the basic-quantity and spatial concept of "between." My patient picked 8 - success! Now the task will be to see if we will have carry-over with this concept without visual support over time.

Central Auditory Processing Disorder can affect a child in so many ways especially in the school system! General tips, give visual support and many repetitions! It's most likely not the case that the child isn't listening but it's that they are not able to fully process without your support.
