8 month year old and Cochlear Implant!

Image
One of my passions is working with children who are deaf or hard of hearing. My stance on working with individuals who have hearing loss or who are deaf/Deaf is "Pro Communication" this means that I support the family and the patient's decision on communication options. These communication options can range from being apart of the Deaf Community and using American Sign Language (ASL) as their form of communication (beautiful language I might add) to being a verbal communicator and everything in-between - there are many many options! This video was circulating around Facebook and I thought I would share it! It is one families experience with activating their son's cochlear implant for the first time! I love this experience for this family! Now that being said this experience doesn't happen for every family. Some children can become overwhelmed and cry, have a different type of reaction when their cochlear implant is turned on or may not react at all. Cochl...

Following Directions and Visual Support

Image
Today in a treatment session I was working on following multi-step directions with one of my patients. This patient has difficulty with auditory processing. One of the directions was for the patient to think of a number between 5 and 10 and then to write it on a piece of paper. I took a picture of what happened below. My patient wrote 5+10= box (the box I'm guessing was likely drawn because I instructed the patient to write it in the bigger box). After my patient did this I proceeded to explain that when we think of a number between 5 and 10 we can choose 6, 7, 8, or 9. Again my patient didn't seem to understand so I supported with visual aid as you can see in the picture... I wrote out the numbers and gave support to the basic-quantity and spatial concept of "between." My patient picked 8 - success! Now the task will be to see if we will have carry-over with this concept without visual support over time. Central Auditory Processing Disorder can affect a child in ...

Review of "Autism Facts and Strategies for Parents"

Image
Recently, I took the time to read "Autism Facts and Strategies for Parents" by Janice E. Janzen, M.S. I wanted to read this book because sometimes I get in the mindset of Speech-Language Pathology. It's important to take some steps back and look at the complete picture. When I started this book I tried to place myself in the position of new mom who just found out that my child has Autism. I thought that this was a great starter book that would help me with finding more resources and a general good guide!  Please note that I have no relation to this author and no one is paying me to write this review. The book is a fairly quick read, it covers great information such as facts about Autism, becoming a strong advocate for your child, therapy options, educational intervention, and basic strategies. It also gives several outside resources to guide into continued research (which is great)! Personally, I have been familiar with the diagnosis of Autism since I was a young...

You're a what?!

I think every Speech-Language Pathologist has had that moment where they are introducing themselves or being introduced and that time comes where you say what you do for a living… Me: ”I’m a Speech-Language Pathologist.” Communication Partner: “You’re a what?” Me: “A Speech-Language Pathologist.” Communication Partner: “Oh a speech teacher!” That dialogue could go on and on, I have heard many variations such as: “so you teach /r/’s,” “oh, you fix hearing!” “I hated my speech teacher” “I loved my speech teacher!”   and… “what is that?” So my hope for this post is to help clear up what a Speech-Language Pathologist does! Speech-Language Pathologists provide prevention services, screenings, assessments/evaluation, consultations, diagnosis, treatment, intervention, management, counseling, and collaboration involving various communicative disorders and swallowing disorders (dysphagia). Within our scope of practice we work with people of all ...
